“Man Made,” a film about transgender bodybuilders, upends the traditional documentary gaze. Bodybuilding offers a ready metaphor for personal transformation, and the film embraces it, showing how exhibiting one’s strength, after years of privately embodied pain, can be freeing—even euphoric.

Hoxxoh’s “Old Enough to Remember” at First Amendment.
Opening on Saturday, September 8th, 2018 at First Amendment Gallery in San Francisco, California is artist Hoxxoh’s brilliant solo exhibition, “Old Enough to Remember,” featuring over 30 works created using self-designed painting mechanisms which obscure process and intention. The finished pieces contain visually striking abstract patterns, revealing little about their nature or creation.
Hoxxoh’s innovative technique departs from previous works and is incredibly difficult to imitate. This technique involves instruments like pendulums, spray cans, and dustpans, which allow each painting to develop its own life beyond his direct intervention. This process requires Hoxxoh to withdraw and let it run its course, which can make or break the final piece. Each piece stands alone as a finished work of art, but contain the story of their creation, creator, and his tools.

Luke Cheuh’s “ANTHROPOMORPHUCKED” at Corey Helford Gallery.
Opening on Saturday, September 8th, 2018 at Corey Helford Gallery is artist Luke Cheuh’s first solo exhibition in four years, “ANTHROPOMORPHUCKED.”
Chueh has become best known for a series of white, almost mascot-like anthropomorphic figures, often depicted with the head of a bear, bunny or chicken. Over time, they have evolved to become empathetic stand-ins for himself and for the viewers. These classic figures will be present alongside a slew of new characters and even objects getting the anthropomorphic treatment, from houses to tea kettles. “ANTHROPOMORPHUCKED” will also premiere new takes on Chinese mythology, from Jiangshi (hopping vampires) to a study featuring a rabbit on the moon—an homage to his heritage as a first generation Chinese-American and the stories that his parents have told him throughout his life.
“ANTHROPOMORPHUCKED” will be on view until September 13th, 2018
